1. Is Giles County a prorating county?
Answer - No, Giles County is not a prorating county. This means that you are taxed on what you own January 1st of the tax year. Anything purchased after January 1st is not assessed for that tax year. 2. If I am in the military, where do I pay personal property taxes? Answer - If your legal domicile is Virginia, your vehicle(s) are subject to personal property taxes from the locality where you are registered regardless of where the vehicle is garaged during your active military service. 3. When are personal property taxes due? Answer - Payment of personal property taxes in Giles County are due on December 5th. A 10% late penalty is assessed on payments made after this date. Beginning January 2nd, an interest charge is applied to the unpaid balance at a annual rate of 10%. 4. If I live within one of the five towns corporate limits, do I only pay town taxes? Answer - No. If you live within the corporate limits of Glen Lyn, Narrows, Pearisburg, Pembroke, or Rich Creek you are responsible for paying both town taxes and county taxes on the vehicles assessed. 5. If I am not a resident of Giles County and own a camper, mobile home, boat, or trailer that is normally garaged in Giles County, do I have to pay taxes to Giles County? Answer - Yes. You are responsible for paying taxes to Giles County if you own a camper, mobile home, boat, or trailer and it is normally garaged in Giles County January 1st of that tax year. If they are garaged inside the corporate limits of any of the five towns, then you are also responsible for paying town taxes. 6. If I am assessed for a vehicle that I did not own January 1st of that tax year, what must I do to receive credit? Answer - In order for credit to be issued on this vehicle, the taxpayer must bring in documentation that proves otherwise. Examples of documentation accepted include: insurance verification, a bill of sale, DMV documentation, or repossession papers. 7. Does the county offer a discount for vehicles with high mileage? Answer - Yes. Giles County offers a high mileage deduction program for vehicles that have over 100,000 miles. The taxpayer must bring in a copy of their last inspection receipt showing the mileage of the vehicle. The deadline for bringing in this information is May 1st. 8. How do I receive credit for an assessment if I was not a resident of Giles County January 1st and did not have any vehicles in Giles County? Answer - You will need to fax the Commissioner of the Revenue's office or bring in a copy of a paid tax ticket from the locality you were a resident of January 1st. This ticket must show the vehicles in question. If your locality is in a state that does not have personal property taxes, we would need some type of proof that you were a resident of that locality. Accepted documents of proof would be voter registration cards, vehicle registration/title transfers to that particular state, or the real estate papers associated with the purchase of your home. All of these documents must contain the date the transaction took place. However, in cases where a person moves to another state, but keeps their Virginia tags active, the responsibility as to where taxes are to be paid goes back to the Virginia locality. 9. I received a personal property ticket on a 99 Toyota pickup for 2004. The vehicle is titled on DMV in my name and my ex-wife's name, but she has possession of this vehicle. Am I still responsible for paying taxes on this vehicle? Answer - Yes. Being that the vehicle was titled on DMV in both names, you both are equally responsible for the taxes.
